SafeAssign
SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention service integrated with the Blackboard Learning System™. It helps prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student papers submitted using Blackboard. This session will present several techniques that may be used to help prevent plagiarism in student writing, including the use of SafeAssign comparison tool. Participants will learn what SafeAssign is and how it works, including the sources used to identify unoriginal content, and how to interpret a SafeAssign originality report. Participants will learn what the University of Louisville expects faculty to include on their syllabi before using the tool. The session will also demonstrate the use of SafeAssign in the context of and as a tool of pedagogy, so understanding and preventing plagiarism through pedagogy will be discussed and examples presented. Instructors will demonstrate how to use the SafeAssign tool in Blackboard to build SafeAssignments for submission of student work. Technical requirements and required browser settings will be discussed. At the end of the session, participants will have 30 minutes of hands-on computer lab time to practice using SafeAssign, if desired.
Better Teaching and Learning Through Blogs and Wikis in Blackboard
Use blogs and wikis to increase student participation and performance in your online and face-to-face classes. In this session we will demonstrate how to use the new TeamsX (wikis) and JournalsX (blogs) tools integrated into Blackboard to help you and your students collaborate on class assignments and to create reflective journals that promote active learning. Along with hands-on demonstrations of the new tools, we will also share best pedagogical practices in using blogs and wikis for better teaching and effective learning.
Blackboard's New Template
Blackboard Assignments
Blackboard has a function that will allow the instructor to accept electronic submissions of papers, homework and other materials students will complete for a grade. This class will take participants through the steps to create an assignment, how to grade the submissions, return graded assignments to students and remove all student submissions after grading.
Classroom Response System
The iClicker system is the University's standard classroom response system. iClicker includes polling, grading, and reporting features allowing for anonymous or graded submissions. During this session you will learn the system uses and best practices to inspire participation.
Blackboard Basics
Blackboard Basics provides the foundational skills to use UofL's course management system. Using Blackboard fosters increased student interaction with the instructor as well as each other. It affords the opportunity to enhance lectures with engaging activities and provides a means to organize and post materials for students to access anytime, anywhere. You'll learn to navigate the system both as a student and instructor; add viewable syllabi, announcements and staff information; add Word documents, PDFs and PowerPoint files; and briefly discuss methods to reduce email use. You'll learn the use of basic Gradebook functions; to include entering columns, ordering columns, gradebook settings, uploading and downloading grades. You are encouraged to bring these items to the session. (2 hours)
Blackboard Advanced
This session provides advanced skills to facilitate online learning strategies through the use of the Blackboard system. Topics include how to engage your online learners through the creation of an online community by using Blackboard's communication tools, chat and virtual classroom as well as the use of the Manage Groups function; also to be covered are exam creation/deployment and grading functions, and the Content System: File Systems, which provides an effective way to collect, share, and discover educational content. You'll learn how to drag and drop content into Blackboard and organize files into personal, course, and institutional folders. It introduces many of Blackboard's document management capabilities including content sharing and workflow, tracking, and searching. (2 hours)
Adobe Presenter
Adobe Presenter, formerly Macromedia Breeze Presenter, is a rich media and e-learning authoring tool that enables you to create professional, high-quality on-demand presentations from within Microsoft PowerPoint. During this demonstration, you’ll see a drab presentation come to life easily and quickly by adding audio, video and software simulations using Adobe Presenter.
Lunch and Learn: Technology Series
The Delphi Center will offer these lecture sessions as an opportunity to provide methods.
Podcasting
This course in Podcasting will give you an understanding of the medium and possible uses. Students will get an explanation of the process and tech terms such as "RSS feed". Also the different types of Podcasting will be discussed. Students will also get some hands on experience creating and editing a simple MP3 that will be used in the Plone class.
Second Life Basics
Second Life is a 3D virtual world instructors are using to create an immersive learning environment. The Delphi Center has a private island in SL. Discover the educational benefits of this environment (virtual field trips, collaborative projects, simulations, and role plays) and learn the basics of getting around.
